The exact order of Russian grammar topics that you should follow

When learning Russian, there are so many grammar topics that you need to know: cases, aspects, prefixes, verbs of motion, and so on and so forth! Another problem is that you can't learn, for example, cases without first learning the gender of nouns. This means that there are a lot of prerequisites to each topic that are unknown to you as a learner.

So, let's establish an order of grammar topics that you should follow when learning Russian grammar!

1st - Gender of nouns

This should be your very first topic because it doesn't have any prerequisites, and getting your mind wrapped around genders of objects early is good. This topic is fairly simple too, here's our video on this:

2nd - Conjugation for present

This topic will now deal with verbs in Russian. More precisely, how verbs change to adjust to different subjects (or actors) in a sentence. Again, this is 2nd, because it doesn't have any prerequisites. Also, it unlocks an ability to talk about present more freely! Here's a video on it:

3rd - Past tense conjugation

This topic will combine topics 1 and 2, so we couldn't put this any higher. High impact on your communication while having fairly simple rules of usage. Great next step! Video:

4th - Verbs Aspects

This topic is THE MOST DIFFICULT one by far. Not due to its complexity, but because this small topic is responsible for so many logic shifts from English to Russian. It will take you a while to fully master it, but just basic knowledge of it will bring you good results and you will be able to use for our next topic too! Video on this:

5th - Future tense conjugation

Now this is a perfect combination of 2 and 4! We won't be adding any new verb forms here at all. Simple topic that is easy to master. Video on it:

We're ALMOST done with verbs. Let's change it up again.

6th - Cases

This topic consists of so many sub-topics that you can truly spend months and months on this. Regular cases, exceptions, rare case forms, adjective cases, numbers and cases, locative case, etc. A LOT OF INFO HERE, but don't get too consumed by it, learn it in layers, not all at once.

7th - Adverbs vs Adjectives

Now, this is something that can be learned at any time before other topics, because it doesn't impact it in any way, but it is also not as impactful on your communication as other topics, thus number 7! We don't have a recent video on that topic, but here you go lol:

8th - Verbs of motion

This will be another topic that is rather difficult to fully grasp at first, so it will take some time! Here's a video on it:

9th - Imperative form of verbs

ANOTHER VERB TOPIC??? Yes, we have a lot fo detail with verbs in Russian. Here's a vid:

10th - Prefixes

And the very last topic for today - prefixes! You can spend another 3 months with this one! A lot of detail and nuance with prefixes and verbs.

Is that all the Russian topics for grammar? No! Far from it! But the rest can be learned at any time, any place. No particular order at all. But, if you want us to guide you through it all, click the image below and join BeFluent! It will be the best decision for your Russian
